Bean leafroll virus

Pisum sativum L.

A viral disease of pea caused by Bean leafroll virus (Luteovirus phaseoli). It is transmitted by aphids in a persistent manner and causes apical chlorosis, leaf rolling, and plant stunting.

The causative agent of the disease is the Bean leafroll virus (BLRV), which in current classification belongs to the genus Luteovirus. The virus is phloem-limited, is not transmitted mechanically via sap, and is not seed-borne. The primary vector for the spread of infection in pea crops is the pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum).

Upon infection, plants exhibit yellowing and downward rolling of apical leaves, general stunted development, and a significant reduction in yield due to a decrease in the number of pods formed. Resistance to BLRV in peas is described as a quantitative trait with polygenic inheritance, and the recessive gene lrv, which provides tolerance to this pathogen, has been identified.
