Barley grain uniformity

Hordeum vulgare L.

Uniformity characterizes the homogeneity of a barley lot based on the geometric dimensions of the grains. This indicator determines the suitability of grain for industrial processing, particularly malting, and influences the uniformity of seedling emergence and the quality of planting material.

In the reference 68 varieties crop Barley, where this is mentioned in the description.

To assess barley grain uniformity, a method of sieving a 100-gram sample through a set of standard sieves is used. The result is expressed as a percentage, representing the mass of residue on a single sieve or the combined mass of residues on two adjacent sieves. It is important to distinguish this parameter from grain size and test weight.

Requirements for this indicator depend on the intended use: for malting barley, uniformity should exceed 85–90%. The proportion of small grain passing through sieves with 2.2x20 mm slots is also regulated, with content in high-quality lots not exceeding 5%.

High seed uniformity promotes uniform seedling emergence and synchronous crop ripening, which facilitates harvesting. In the processing industry, grain homogeneity is essential for proper equipment calibration, minimizing losses, and achieving a stable yield of malt or groats.
