Beta vulgaris Sugar Beet Group

This trait is not a standardized parameter of varietal value and does not have a direct correlation with root crop yield. In breeding trials, the height of the leaf rosette is more often assessed as an indicator of the growth intensity of the photosynthetic apparatus.

For sugar beet, plant height is not included in the list of mandatory indicators for state variety testing. For research purposes, the height of the leafy portion is measured — the distance from the soil to the apical bud or the attachment points of the petioles, which serves as supplementary biometric data on growth intensity.

No direct relationship between the height of the above-ground mass and root productivity has been established; excessive top growth is considered an undesirable trait. Plant height acquires practical significance only in the second year of vegetation during the formation of flowering stems, which can reach 150 cm or more.
