In barley breeding practice, measurements are taken starting from the mass heading phase. According to the VIR classification, varieties are divided into groups: dwarf (less than 60 cm), semi-dwarf (60.1–80 cm), short (80.1–100 cm), medium-height (100.1–120 cm), and tall (more than 120 cm). Modern commercial varieties are more often in the 60–90 cm range.
Height is directly correlated with lodging resistance: tall forms are most prone to lodging under excessive nitrogen fertilization, which reduces yield by 25–60% and impairs grain quality. At the same time, excessive reduction in height during drought years may limit the realization of biological yield potential.
