Narcissus Plant Height

Narcissus L.

The height of a Narcissus is defined as the distance from the soil surface to the top of the leafless flower stalk (scape). This parameter is a key varietal trait, ranging from 8–10 cm in dwarf forms to 60 cm in tall-growing varieties.

The trait is measured in centimeters and is critical for the classification and utilization of a variety. Dwarf forms, such as members of the Bulbocodium group, reach 8–20 cm, while classic garden groups, including Trumpet and Large-cupped narcissi, have flower stalks 30–60 cm in height.

In cultivation, plant height determines the sphere of use: cut flowers require long, sturdy stalks, while landscape design benefits from varietal diversity in height to create tiered compositions. When evaluating tall-growing varieties, the resistance of the flower stalk to lodging caused by environmental factors is also taken into account.
