Variety traits
Narcissus L.
An important morphological trait of Narcissus that determines the ornamental value and suitability of a cultivar for cut flowers, landscaping, or forcing.
In the reference 32 varieties crop Daffodil, where this is mentioned in the description.
During Narcissus variety testing, the height of the scape is measured from the soil surface to the base of the flower. In breeding, this indicator is evaluated on a 5-point scale, taking into account stem strength; for statistical significance, at least 10 plants of each variety are analyzed.
The height of Narcissus scapes varies from 8–15 cm in dwarf forms to 60 cm in tall forms, with the range most in demand for the commercial market being 30–50 cm. Height evaluation is always conducted relative to the standards of a specific garden group.
Scape strength is a key requirement to prevent lodging under the weight of the flower during precipitation or irrigation. For cut flower production and forcing, cultivars with the most robust, straight, and long stems, capable of holding the flower in an upright position, are preferred.
