The suitability of Narcissus for cutting is determined by a physiological trait of the plant: the release of toxic mucilaginous sap when the stem is damaged. This secretion inhibits the vitality of other cut flowers; therefore, narcissi require preliminary conditioning in clean water for 2–6 hours until sap secretion ceases completely. Re-trimming the stem after this procedure is unacceptable, as it triggers renewed sap release.

The optimal stage for harvesting narcissi is considered to be the 'gooseneck' or 'pencil' stage, when the bud is fully colored but still nodding. When selecting cultivars for commercial cutting, priority is given to stem strength, the ability to maintain decorative quality in a vase for 3–6 days, as well as aesthetic qualities of shape and fragrance.
