Greenhouse Culture of Cape Cowslip (Lachenalia)

For the successful development of Lachenalia, it is critical to maintain cool conditions: night temperatures should be in the range of 8–14°C, while daytime temperatures during the flowering period should not exceed 16°C. At the beginning of the growing season, temperatures of 13–17°C are acceptable; however, a subsequent reduction in temperature is necessary for the formation of high-quality flower stalks. The crop is highly sensitive to insufficient light and poor air circulation, which triggers plant elongation and necessitates active greenhouse ventilation.

Due to a tendency for uneven flowering, individual bulb planting followed by potting on is effective in commercial production. The substrate must be highly porous and possess good drainage properties; a layer of sand or gravel is often used to protect the bulb base from rot. Upon completion of the flowering cycle, the plant requires a mandatory dormancy period in dry conditions with a complete cessation of watering.
