Winter protection of asparagus

Asparagus officinalis L.

An agrotechnical practice for protecting shallow-situated asparagus rhizomes from freezing by mulching with organic materials after autumn haulm removal.

To protect asparagus buds forming near the soil surface, mulching is applied after the autumn cutting of the aerial parts. The recommended layer of humus is at least 8 cm; compost, straw, or hay are also used. In regions with harsh or low-snow winters, as well as for young plantings, additional covering with spruce branches or leaves is applied.

If the haulm shows signs of infection or pests, plant residues must be destroyed to prevent the spread of diseases. In spring, the mulch should be removed or leveled in a timely manner so as not to delay soil warming and shoot growth. This covering is functionally distinct from the spring ridging performed for shoot blanching.
