Fusarium Wilt of Asparagus

Asparagus officinalis L.

A complex disease of asparagus caused by fungi of the genus Fusarium, affecting the root system and shoots. It leads to the destruction of the vascular system, tissue decay, and plant wilting.

In the reference 21 varieties crop Asparagus, where this is mentioned in the description.

The causative agents of Fusarium wilt of asparagus are a complex of fungi, among which the most dangerous species are Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. asparagi, Fusarium proliferatum, and Fusarium redolens. F. culmorum, F. equiseti, F. solani, F. fujikuroi, F. acuminatum, F. avenaceum, F. sporotrichioides, and F. tricinctum are also detected in infected plant tissues.

The disease manifests as root and crown rots, as well as damage to young white and green spears, the intensity of which increases towards the end of the harvest season. The blockage of vessels by mycelium disrupts water supply, which provokes general wilting of the above-ground part, especially pronounced during hot periods. Specific resistance genes have not been identified in the crop, and breeding work relies on the evaluation of the phenotypic resistance of hybrids.
