Asparagus Rust

Asparagus officinalis L.

A fungal disease of asparagus caused by the autoecious pathogen Puccinia asparagi DC. The disease undergoes four stages of development, causing premature stem death and weakening of the plant's root system.

In the reference 27 varieties crop Asparagus, where this is mentioned in the description.

The causative agent of asparagus rust is the fungus Puccinia asparagi DC. It is an autoecious pathogen whose complete life cycle, including the pycnidiospore, aeciospore, urediniospore, and teliospore stages, is completed exclusively on the host plant.

The onset of the disease begins in spring with the formation of light-green spots with pycnidia and aecia on young shoots. In summer, orange-brown uredinia develop on the plants, facilitating mass infection, and by autumn, black teliospores are formed, which serve as the overwintering stage for the fungus.

The infection leads to premature yellowing and dieback of the cladodes. This negatively affects nutrient accumulation processes in the root system, leading to a significant reduction in asparagus productivity in subsequent growing seasons.
