Variety traits
Asparagus officinalis L.
The ability of asparagus to maintain viability and productivity under stress factors such as low temperatures and soil salinity. It is evaluated through damage indices, biochemical markers, and morphometric indicators in comparison with control plants.
In the reference 12 varieties crop Asparagus, where this is mentioned in the description.
To assess asparagus tolerance, a complex of physiological and morphological methods is applied. When determining salt tolerance, a salt damage index on a scale from 0 to 4 points is used. The physiological status is evaluated by enzyme activity (peroxidase, superoxide dismutase), proline levels, soluble protein content, and electrolyte leakage, as well as by the accumulation of fresh and dry mass of the aerial part and roots.
High frost tolerance is critically important for maintaining a perennial crop and ensuring active bud growth after overwintering. Salinity tolerance allows for cultivating asparagus in areas with high salt content, preventing a yield decline of more than 60%, which is observed in sensitive varieties.
Tolerance gradations—ranging from high to sensitive—are established based on statistical analysis of the obtained indices. A variety is considered tolerant if, under stress exposure, it demonstrates a statistically significant smaller reduction in biomass and physiological functions compared to standard samples.
