Winter Hardiness of Winter Rapeseed

Brassica napus L.

The complex ability of winter rapeseed to withstand sub-zero temperatures, thaws, and early spring stresses. It is determined by the condition of the root collar and sugar accumulation during the rosette stage.

In the reference 34 varieties crop Rapeseed, where this is mentioned in the description.

For winter rapeseed, the stage of entering winter is critical: optimal plant development is considered to be a rosette with 6–8 leaves, a root collar diameter of 8–12 mm, and a root length of at least 20 cm. At the same time, overgrown plants with more than 10 leaves and an elevated growing point lose frost resistance and can die at -8…-10 °C, whereas hardened plants can withstand temperatures down to -16…-20 °C, and under snow cover — down to -35 °C.

Winter hardiness assessment is conducted by calculating plant survival rates in spring or by using the monolith method with subsequent regrowth in controlled conditions. High crop survival is considered to be 85–95%, medium — 70–75%, and low — less than 65%. The main risks for reduced indicators are errors in agronomic practices, such as failure to meet sowing dates, excessive nitrogen nutrition in autumn, and pest damage that hinders the accumulation of reserve substances.
