The Highland variety is formed from selected natural populations found in the hilly terrain of western Oregon. In modern botanical classification, the plant is identified as Agrostis castellana, although historically it was often mistakenly classified as Agrostis capillaris.
The plant possesses a pronounced rhizomatous growth habit and forms a dense turf. The variety is characterized by low maintenance requirements and the ability to develop a root system that prevents soil erosion.
It is used for establishing sports and ornamental lawns, often as part of seed mixtures, as well as for land reclamation purposes. In agriculture, it can be used as a forage crop.
