The Simple variety (also known as Commun) is an annual herbaceous plant with smooth, lacy pinnate foliage that externally resembles parsley. The plant is adapted for cultivation in gardens and containers in sunny or semi-shaded areas with fertile, moist soil.

The leaves possess a mild anise aroma and are used fresh for preparing sauces, salads, and garnishing dishes, as flavor qualities diminish significantly upon drying or heat treatment. The variety is not the result of a specific company's breeding program and is classified as public domain.
