The variety is classified as Brassica oleracea var. acephala. In historical sources, it is referred to as Ovari Takarmanykaposzta, which translates as Ovari forage kale, and is intended primarily for forage purposes.

Specialized agronomic descriptions of the variety, including morphological traits and maturity dates, are absent from open publications. The name Ovari may lead to confusion with other agricultural crops of Hungarian breeding, for example, the pattypan squash variety Ovari fehér.
