The Maris Kestral variety is a short-stemmed plant with short stalks and a high leaf-to-stem ratio. The stalks contain a low level of fiber.

The plant possesses high nutritional value and good cold hardiness. After exposure to frost, the leaves acquire a sweet taste, which increases their attractiveness to sheep and cattle from autumn through March.

Used exclusively as a forage crop for grazing animals directly in the field, as well as for forage harvesting or feed mixtures.
