Plants of this group are distinguished by a tall stem, reaching 0.9–1 meter or more, which accumulates nutrients. The leaves are relatively coarse and are rarely used for human consumption.

The primary agricultural purpose of the crop is use as livestock feed or as an intermediate ground cover crop to prevent nitrogen leaching. The plants are biennial and possess high winter hardiness.

In the scientific community, the name Marrow Stem Kale is also known as a standard plant sample used for calibrating chemical analysis methods for micronutrient content in plants.
