The variety is intended for use as a forage grass. During testing, characteristics such as the presence of anthocyanin coloration of the first leaf sheath of seedlings, the degree of leaf roughness, and the natural plant height in spring are evaluated, although specific numerical values for these indicators are not published.

In some databases, another plant species—intermediate wheatgrass (Elytrigia intermedia / Elymus intermedia)—may be referred to under the same name, so botanical verification is required when working with seed material.
