The Svaja variety was developed in Sweden and included in national variety lists in 1976. This work was one of the final stages of the breeding of this crop in Sweden before the program was discontinued, which is recorded in international genetic resource databases.

Smooth brome is traditionally used as a perennial forage crop for hayfields and pastures. The plant is characterized by high yield, winter hardiness, and drought tolerance, although a detailed description of the morphological traits of the Svaja variety specifically is absent in sources.
