Amarelal is a traditional (ancestral) Castanea sativa clone, maintained in cultivation for a long time. The variety is included in products with a protected designation of origin, such as Castanha da Terra Fria.

Morphologically, the variety is distinguished by a relatively thin leaf blade, which indicates adaptation to conditions with moderate solar stress. The fruits have an elongated-elliptical shape, a shiny reddish-brown color with dark longitudinal stripes, and an intense flavor.

The fruits are used in the food industry and for supply to the fresh market, undergoing calibration, cleaning, and freezing processes. Scientific data on the variety are focused mainly on its biochemical composition, genetic identification, and physiological leaf parameters.
