The variety is a traditional cultivar growing in northern Portugal. In scientific studies conducted by the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, the variety is considered part of the cultural and genetic heritage of the region, with no information available regarding its purposeful breeding.

The fruits of the variety contain approximately 43 g of starch and 3 g of fat per 100 g of dry matter. A characteristic feature of the composition is a relatively high level of saturated fatty acids compared to a number of other varieties. The fruits are consumed roasted, boiled, or used for further processing.
