The variety is autochthonous to the Campania region, Italy, and is known by the synonyms Santimango, Marrone di Avellino and Marrone avellinese. It is the result of folk selection, not a modern breeding process.

The fruits of the variety are characterized by large size and high taste qualities. The variety is independent and differs from the varieties included in the geographically protected designations such as Castagna di Montella (IGP).
