The "Montagne" variety, also known by the synonyms Grosse de Loubejac and Marron de Villefranche, is the result of folk selection. The fruit of this variety belongs to the "marrón" type, characterized by large size, oblong shape, a small hilum, and light brown color.
This variety is widely used in the food industry, in particular for the production of candied chestnuts, and is also sold on the fresh market. Traditional varieties of this group are gradually being replaced by new hybrids with higher disease resistance.
