The plant is endemic to Japan, forming dense turfs or cushions 10–20 to 40–60 cm in height. The leaves are lobed, with characteristic silvery pubescence on the underside. Small tubular yellow flowers are gathered in corymbose inflorescences about 1.5 cm in diameter.
The plant is late-flowering, with flowering occurring in October–November. It prefers full sun or partial shade, requires well-drained soils, and is sensitive to winter waterlogging. The variety Benny is a specialized breeding product based on this species, distinguished by more compact growth.
The right is granted for a limited term: propagation of the variety requires a license from the rights holder.
