The variety is a spontaneous bud mutation of common clementine. In Italy, it is registered under the name Clementina Sanzo, and in the European Union, it is undergoing the patenting process as Clementina Perrina. Before entering the market, the variety underwent a virus sanitation process at the CREA-OFA center.

The fruits mature late, starting from the second half of January until the end of February. The breeding objective was to provide the European market with high-quality domestic produce during the period when traditional varieties have finished fruiting and the market switches to imported citrus.
