The variety is the result of selection of a spontaneous mutation of the Comune clementine. The variety name is associated with the presence of small thorns on the strong branches of the plant, while on young shoots they are less pronounced or absent.

The tree is of medium vigor with a dense, slightly upright crown. The fruits have an oblate-spherical shape and a weight of 80 to 180 g. The skin is orange, thin, and easily separates from the flesh. The variety is considered seedless, however, cross-pollination may result in the appearance of a small number of seeds.

Ripening occurs in mid-October, which is 15–20 days earlier than other clementine varieties. The plant is susceptible to citrus exocortis, so the choice of rootstock plays a key role in the tree's health.
