Variety description

10 August 2026

Varieties of the Ruby group originate from bud mutations or targeted breeding. Ruby Red arose as a mutation of the Thompson variety, Star Ruby was developed by irradiating Hudson variety seeds, and Ray Ruby was discovered as a mutation of Ruby Red. In natural conditions, the plants reach a height of 4.5–6 meters.

The fruits are distinguished by intense flesh coloration and often have a reddish blush on the peel. The number of seeds in the fruits varies from few to none. The varieties are table types, suitable for fresh consumption and juice production, as well as for container cultivation.

Agrotechnical characteristics depend on the specific cultivar. For example, Star Ruby is considered a demanding variety with increased sensitivity to diseases, including Phytophthora and chlorosis, as well as to temperature fluctuations, which requires specific control of growing conditions.
