The Tardivo di Ciaculli variety is a natural mutation of the Avana mandarin group, discovered in the vicinity of Palermo. It is a late-maturing variety, with harvesting taking place in February–March. The plant is characterized as compact and slow-growing with thin, drooping branches, which may require support due to the weight of the fruit.

The fruits are medium-sized, ranging from 75 to 120 grams, and have a flattened shape. The intense orange-colored peel is very thin and separates easily from the juicy, sweet pulp with a pronounced aroma of essential oils. The classic variety contains seeds; work on creating a seedless (apireno) version is being conducted by breeders.

The variety is prone to alternate bearing; therefore, thinning of ovaries is recommended to stabilize the yield. When grown in indoor conditions, the variety proves to be undemanding and well-adapted to maintenance.
