The variety is an Estonian breeding hybrid developed by Uno and Aili Kivistik. Official registration of the variety at the Estonian PVR office took place in February 2004, which secured its priority right to use the name «Maria» in accordance with ICNCP rules.

In open sources and agronomic publications, detailed morphological descriptions of the variety, such as height, flower size, or pruning group, are presented to a limited extent. Data on this hybrid should be verified in the catalogs of the Roogoja nursery, which is the originator of the variety.
