The European clone «Lombardii» is a deciduous shrub 2.5–5 m tall with smooth brown bark and rounded leaves that turn an orange-yellow hue in autumn. The plant blooms in March–April, bears fruit in September, and is well-tolerant of pruning and frost. It is used primarily as an ornamental specimen plant.

The «Lombardskii» hazelnut group includes the varieties «Lombardskii belyi» and «Lombardskii krasnyi». These are vigorous shrubs that require cross-pollination and warmth. The fruits have an elongated shape and a fragile shell, and are used in the confectionery industry and for fresh consumption.
