The Thinscald nut variety is recognized as a synonym for the Cosford variety, which is also known by the names Cosforder Zellernuss, Improved Cosford, and Miss Young’s. The variety is of British origin and was first officially described in 1829.

The plant is included in registries of nut cultivars. A characteristic feature of the nuts is a thin shell, which is reflected in the German synonym Weichschalige. The nuts ripen in September.
