The Tonda Bianca variety is used in agronomy as a rootstock for other hazelnut varieties, which is due to its low ability to produce root suckers. Trees grafted onto this rootstock show high vegetative growth, although their yield in comparative studies was lower than that of other rootstocks.
The use of the variety as a rootstock influences the qualitative characteristics of the fruits: it contributes to improving oil stability in the kernels and the formation of a lighter-colored skin. Nuts of this variety are characterized by relatively easy cracking.
