The name originated in 1980–1983 in the context of research work on the study of cypress canker caused by the fungus Seiridium cardinale. The project was focused on forest genetics and the selection of genotypes possessing resistance to this pathology.

Currently, the designation is used as a commercial name for decorative forms of cypress with a columnar crown. The height, growth rate, and winter hardiness parameters attributed to such plants are descriptive data from nurseries, not the results of standardized variety trials.

Plants sold under this name are intended for decorative landscaping, use as a solitary plant, or for creating hedges.
