The plant reaches a height of 1.5–2 meters. The heads are of medium size and conical shape; a characteristic feature is the intense violet-purple coloration of the bracts. When grown from seeds, the harvest in the first year is usually collected at the end of summer.
The variety is thermophilic and requires sunny areas with fertile, drained soil. It is sensitive to frost and excessive moisture. Due to the historically prevailing vegetative method of propagation, there are many clones within the variety, which causes population heterogeneity.
The ripening flower heads have a universal culinary purpose and are used fresh, boiled, or canned. Due to its appearance, the plant also possesses decorative qualities and is used in landscape design.
