The plant reaches a height of 120 to 160 cm. The leaf stalks are characterized as thin and bright green. To obtain a marketable appearance, a blanching procedure is required, during which the stalks are tied and covered with an opaque material 2–3 weeks before harvest.

The crop is harvested from November to March. The stalks are consumed stewed or baked. The plant possesses decorative properties due to its large silvery-green leaves and violet inflorescences, and is characterized by good keeping quality during storage.
