The plant forms bushes 45–60 cm in height and width. Young shoots have a deep wine-red color, which changes to dark purple-green as they mature. In autumn, the foliage color becomes more intense.
The variety is drought-tolerant and has winter hardiness in USDA zone 6. The plant is resistant to damage by rabbits and deer due to the presence of milky sap; it is used in borders, rock gardens, and container plantings.
