The Sámur variety is a red fescue adapted to Icelandic conditions. Research notes its ability to effectively form plant cover and prevent erosion, as well as suppress soil heaving during freezing.
The plant is used in scientific research studying the influence of temperature regimes on the development of herbaceous crops. The variety is classified as Festuca rubra L., however, detailed morphological characteristics and data on maturity in open sources are limited.
