Crawford is an interspecific hybrid obtained from crossing the Balaton cherry variety and the Gisela® 6 rootstock. It is used to restrict tree growth, allowing for a height reduction of approximately 60%, with trees on this rootstock being comparable in vigor to Gisela® 3 and Gisela® 5.
Characteristics of the rootstock include minimal root sucker formation, high precocity, and productivity. With high yields, fruit thinning may be required to maintain quality. The rootstock is being studied in breeding programs aimed at increasing resistance to diseases, including root rot.
