Rootstock GI 148/1 was obtained by crossing Prunus cerasus and Prunus canescens. Trees on this rootstock reach 65–75% of the vigor of standard rootstocks, making them semi-dwarfing and convenient for maintenance and harvesting. Plants enter the fruiting stage earlier than usual and maintain high fruit quality.
This rootstock propagates well by softwood cuttings and the in vitro method, and produces little root suckering. It requires cultivation on fertile loamy soils provided with regular irrigation. In the first years after planting, it may require support. It is characterized by resistance to Blumeriella jaapii.
In the GI 148 series of hybrids, this rootstock is classified as more vigorous compared to GI 148/2 (Gisela 5).
