The variety 'Amsterdam' (breeding designation 'Ramst') is a dense shrub 100–150 cm in height. The plant has broad, dark green, ovate leaves with serrated margins.

Inflorescences are large, dense, and spherical in shape. Petal color varies from pinkish-red to red; a shift to a blue shade is possible depending on soil acidity. Flowering in open field occurs from July to September.

The plant is winter-hardy, but in the central region requires protection from wind and late spring frosts, as flower buds are formed on previous year's shoots.
