Althone is a synonym for the variety Altona. The plant is a medium-sized shrub, reaching a height of about 1.2 meters. The foliage is light green in color and has characteristic sharp serrations along the edges.

The inflorescences are large, spherical in shape, and consist of flowers with serrated sepals. The flowering period lasts from July to September. The plant is characterized as disease-resistant and winter-hardy, corresponding to USDA hardiness zones 6–9.
