The "Amacha" variety is a shrub 80–150 cm tall. Its elliptical serrated leaves have a purple tint in spring, turn green in summer, and acquire a purple color by autumn. The leaves contain phyllodulcin, a natural sweetener used to make traditional tea.
Inflorescences are small and flat. Upon opening, the flowers have a white-pink hue, which changes to crimson over time, and to blue in acidic soils. The flowering period lasts from June–July to August–October.
The plant is winter-hardy, withstands temperatures down to -23...-25°C, and is resistant to diseases and pests. Sites in partial shade with moist, well-drained soils are preferred for cultivation.
