Deciduous compact shrub, reaching a height of 1–1.2 m. In Japan, the cultivar is also known as 'Komochi Shichidanka'. In botanical classifications, the plant is sometimes identified as Hydrangea serrata var. serrata f. prolifera.
The inflorescences belong to the lacecap group and consist of a central part with small fertile flowers and a ring of double star-shaped sterile flowers. The color of the inflorescences varies from light blue and lavender to pink, depending on soil acidity and lighting.
Flowering lasts from July to October; the cultivar is capable of forming flowers on current-year shoots. The plant is characterized by higher winter hardiness compared to Hydrangea macrophylla, however, it requires protection in regions with severe winters.
Used as an ornamental plant for planting as a solitary specimen, in borders, and in containers.
