The shrub reaches a height of 3–4 meters, has a spreading rounded crown and straight chestnut-brown shoots, the bark of which peels off in flakes over time. The leaves are large, ovate or elliptical, dark green in summer, and turn yellow-brown in autumn.
The inflorescences are umbellate corymbs 10–18 cm in diameter, consisting of fertile and marginal sterile flowers. Upon opening, the petals are white, later turning pink, and towards the end of flowering they may acquire a purple or crimson shade.
The species is characterized by high winter hardiness and drought tolerance. Flowering occurs in the summer period, from June to September, and the plant begins to flower at the age of 5–6 years. The inflorescences are suitable for cutting and creating dry bouquets; the plant itself is used in ornamental gardening as a solitaire or for hedges.
