The variety was obtained as a result of a breeding program at the University of California, Davis. The parental forms were the Chandler variety and accession PI 159568, collected in Afghanistan, which provided the variety with improved kernel quality characteristics and disease resistance.
Durham belongs to early-maturing varieties, ripening approximately 10 days earlier than the Chandler variety, which allows for optimization of harvesting equipment use. The fruits of the variety are large (jumbo size), have high kernel fill and light kernel color, which meets high quality standards for commercial cultivation.
The right is granted for a limited term: propagation of the variety requires a license from the rights holder.
