The Cloden variety is a result of breeding by the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA, France). The plant is a dessert apple tree intended for fresh consumption.
In scientific literature, the variety is actively used in breeding work to create new hybrid lines. Pomological studies note the external resemblance of the fruit to the Reinette Clochard variety, which sometimes requires molecular genetic identification using SSR markers.
