The variety historically originates from the area of Wijk bij Duurstede in the Netherlands. In the past, apples of this variety were traditionally used for making sauce and drying. The fruits have an attractive appearance with a red gloss or stripes on a green background and firm flesh.

The tree is not self-fertile; to obtain a yield, pollinators such as the varieties Cox's Orange Pippin, Gravensteiner, James Grieve, and Red Jonathan are required. The variety is characterized by a late onset of the fruiting period, while being capable of producing quite high yields and is considered quite healthy.
