The variety has a long history and is mentioned in Danish sources from the late 18th century. The name "Flaskeæble" (bottle apple) is due to the characteristic shape of the fruits. In Sweden, the variety is known as "Melonäpple", and it is also associated with the "Nonnetitte" variety.

The variety is of interest for the preservation of biodiversity. It had limited use in breeding: in particular, it was one of the parents of the "Dronning Louise" variety. In historical documents, it is mentioned as part of the raw material base for cider production.
