The Westerwälder Grünapfel variety, described in 1884, belongs to winter apple trees. The fruits reach harvest maturity at the end of October and can be stored until April–May, with their flesh becoming less firm from January onwards. The shape of the fruits is round-conical or tall-round, the size is medium or large.

The skin of the fruits at harvest has a bottle-green or olive-green color, which changes to a yellow shade during storage, sometimes with an orange-red blush. The fruit flesh is juicy and firm, of a yellow-green color. The trees are characterized by hardiness and adaptation to unfavorable growing conditions.

The fruits are table and culinary, they are suitable for culinary processing, baking, and juice production. The term Grünapfel is often used as a general designation for various local varieties, therefore different forms may be encountered under this name, including Betzinger Grünapfel.
